EILEEN GRAY (1878-1976)
Meubles Modernistes 1924/1934
La galerie présentera un ensemble de meubles et d’objets modernistes d’Eileen Gray.
Cet ensemble comprendra des meubles qu’Eileen Gray a réalisés pour les maisons « E1027 » à Roquebrune Cap-martin en 1926-29 et « Tempe a Pailla » à Castellar (Menton) en 1932-34 ainsi que pour l’appartement de Jean Badovici à Paris..et son appartement personnel, 21 rue Bonaparte à Paris en 1930.
La plupart sont restés des pièces uniques pour des expériences appartenant au concept général de ses maisons qui étaient pour elle un phénomène d’esthétisme global.
Ce qui fascinait Eileen Gray étaient les mécanismes de l’existence. Elle analysait les fonctions du corps et de l’esprit : être assis, se reposer, lire manger, converser, s’amuser, se laver, s’habiller, dormir… pour concevoir de nouvelles solutions contemporaines pour ses meubles et ses installations.
L’histoire a retenu ses solutions apportées au problème complexe que pose la conception d’une habitation.
Pour ses deux maisons-manifeste, Eileen Gray a créé des meubles et des objets en rupture complète avec la tradition de ses productions antérieures (ébénisterie et laque). Fascinée par les possibilités des nouvelles techniques, elle conçut un grand nombre de meubles à systèmes, d’autres avec des plateaux dépliants, des tiroirs pivotants, des casiers avec abattant. Mais aussi une prise électrique surdimensionnée et mobile, un tapis d’été en bâche surpiquée, un tabouret-escabeau-porte serviettes. Enfin un siège non-conformiste de forme asymétrique et ne possédant qu’un accoudoir, un meuble porte pantalons avec des parois transparentes en celluloïd, des chaises repliables ou à assises escamotables….
Dés 1925, elle anticipa avec l’usage du tube, du fer, du contreplaqué, de l’aluminium…sur les productions qui ne se développeront réellement qu’après la seconde guerre mondiale avec d’autres créateurs ? elle manifesta sa façon très personnelle d’utiliser toute sorte de métaux industriels (matériaux favoris du Mouvement Moderne) anticipant les réalisations d’une génération ultérieure de modernistes qui fût qualifiée de « High Tech ».
Adulée par toute le génération « De Stilj » : J.J.Oud, Van Esteren, Jan Wills, Van Ravensteyn, Gerrit Rietveld, puis Maracel Breuer, Walter Gropius, Bruno Taut, Pierre Chareau, Le Corbusier….Elle séduira ensuite toute la génération des très grands architectes modernes : Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers, Tadao Ando….
L’ingéniosité, la justesse, l’atmosphère et la modernité intemporelle de toutes ses créations et la qualité abstraite de son mobilier moderniste la rendent incontournable dans l’histoire du design du 20e siècle.
Eileen Gray est née en 1878 en Irlande.
Après des études d’art à la Slade School de Londres, elle s’installe à Paris en 1907
Elle y résidera jusqu’à sa mort en 1976.
Elle découvre la laque à Londres puis la développe en ouvrant un atelier à Paris et en répondant à des nombreuses commandes (Jacques Doucet, Madame Tachard..)
Elle ouvre la galerie Jean Désert en 1922
Sa rencontre avec Jean Badovici à la fin des années 20, la conduit vers l’Architecture et la réalisation des ses maisons E1027 et Tempe a Pailla.
Elle réalise l’ensemble du mobilier de ces maisons.
Après la guerre, elle poursuit son aventure architecturale en travaillant de façon plus solitaire mais avec une grande acuité sur le monde qui l’entoure.
Pour sa participation à Frieze Masters, c’est un ensemble exceptionnel que la galerie exposera. Patiemment réuni depuis plus de 30 ans, celui-ci rendra hommage à cette grande créatrice du Mouvement Moderne
La galerie éditera un catalogue complet de sa collection à paraître pour l’occasion.

Modernist Furniture 1924:1934
The gallery is proud to present a solo show of original pieces of furniture by Eileen Gray.
This ensemble collected will include furniture that Eileen Gray put together for the houses E 1027 in Roquebrune Cap-Martin in 1926-1929 and Tempe a Pailla at Castellar in 1932-34. But also furniture from the apartment of the architect Jean Badovici (1893-1956) in Paris in 1930 and furniture from her own apartment in Paris at 21 rue Bonaparte.
What fascinated Eileen Gray was the mechanism of existence. She analyzed the function of the body and the mind: to be seated, to rest, to read, to eat, to converse, to have fun, to get washed, to get dressed, to sleep… as to conceive new contemporary solutions for her furniture and installations.
History has taken into consideration her solutions brought to the complex problem posed by the conception of an habitat.
For her two statement houses Eileen gray has created furniture and objects that completely break with the tradition of her early productions (cabinetmaker, lacquer) fascinated by the possibilities of the new techniques – she conceived a great number system furniture of which a table present in a horizontal way as a sliding-trombone. Others with fold down trays revolving–drawers, the compartments with flap, an electric oversized plug, a towel-rail stepladder, a stitch canvas carpet. A non-conformist asymetric armchair with ab arm rest, one handing mobile closer for pants or fold down chairs.
As soon as 1925, she anticipated with the use of tubes, irons, plywood, aluminum… on the production that will really only start developing after the Second War world with other designers. She manifested her very personal way to use all sorts of industrial metals (favorite material of the Modernist Movement) anticipating the productions of a following generation of modernists who were qualified as High Tech
The ingenuity, the rightness, the atmosphere and the timeless modernity of all her creations and the abstract quality of her modernist furniture make Eileen Gray unique and iconic in the design of the 20th century.

For this first venue at Frieze Masters the Gallery will present this exceptional ensemble reunited over more than 30 years as a tribute to Eileen Gray, icon of the Modernism.
The gallery will publish a complete catalog of its collection published for the fair.
